What we think of the Porthminster Hotel in St Ives: (updated December 2009)

We're always on the look-out for hotels in Devon and Cornwall that have a certain "wow" factor. And we think that the Porthminster Hotel has a real "wow" factor with its views! Park in the hotel's ample car park (a rarity in St Ives!), check-in with the friendly, helpful and efficient staff, order a pot of tea (or something stronger) in the hotel's comfy lounge, and settle down to enjoy the fantastic sea views. Beneath the hotel is Porthminster Beach - pristine golden sands and azure ocean water to match almost anywhere in the world. And the hotel is an easy walk into the centre of the bustling harbour-town of St Ives, packed with restaurants, jolly pubs, artist-owned galleries and of course the Tate St Ives. There are three main beaches to choose from - all of which are spectacularly clean. The hotel offers a range of rooms, from good-value garden-view rooms to spacious sea-view suites complete with balconies. Breakfast is great - a nice help-yourself buffet to start, followed by freshly cooked full-English with quality bacon, locally-sourced sausages and all the usual trimmings. The hotel is currently undergoing a major refurbishment, to include a new leisure spa - but in the meantime there's a small indoor leisure centre and (during the summer months) an outdoor pool with views over the beach and gardens.
